What can The Grammar Geek do for you?

I edit all types of written material: fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, children’s books, essays, short stories, articles, marketing collateral, manuals, brochures, press releases, web content, and grant proposals.  I work on hard copy or on electronic documents in Word or Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. 

I work with the client to preserve the voice and feel of the work.  It’s your work, in your words, with your style.

I add value to the written project by ensuring clarity, focus, and consistency.

What levels of editing do I offer?

I offer a variety of different levels of editing, tailored to the needs of the individual client:

Proofreading: check for errors in spelling and punctuation; check for typographical errors and problems with page makeup

Copyediting: check spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax; check for consistency and accuracy; cross-check tables, references, art, and figures; create a style sheet to ensure consistency throughout the manuscript
Substantive editing: work with the client to solve problems of clarity and accuracy; reorganize and, in some cases, rewrite text to polish it and make it all it can be

Developmental editing: work with client to develop project from the initial concept through subsequent drafts

How do we decide what level of edit is needed?

After initially discussing the project with the client, either in person, over the phone, or via email, I can do a free sample edit to determine the specific requirements of the work. This usually consists of a couple of chapters (approximately 20 pages) for longer works or a smaller sample for shorter works. The client and I will then discuss my recommendations and decide together on the best approach for the project.

A written contract is required.

What are my rates?

My rates are competitive and vary according to the requirements of the specific project. I follow the pricing guidelines of the Editorial Freelancers Association (http://www.the-efa.org).  I can accept credit card payments through Paypal.
